Trade Deadline Marathon: Day 18
DET receives: SF TJ Warren
PHX receives: PG Ish Smith, SF Stanley Johnson, PF Henry Ellenson, 2019 First Round Pick (Lottery Protected)
The Pistons have made it known they want to maximize Blake Griffin’s potential by improving the roster. Warren would be a relatively cheap, but substantial upgrade to the roster. Giving away a slew of players and a pick should do the trick for Detroit. At 25-years-old, Warren is averaging 18.3 PPG and can score in a variety of ways. Fortunately for the Pistons, he is shooting 42.8% from three, which would serve as much-needed floor spacing for Griffin and Andre Drummond. Not to mention, he is under contract until after the 2021-22 season.
For Phoenix, it’s all about the future. Warren has been the center of trade rumors in Phoenix for the past couple seasons and the value may not rise too much more. They take back three expiring contracts; Johnson and Ellenson could use a change of scenery and it could do wonders for both respective careers. However, the draft asset is the most appealing for the Suns, who are in full tank mode. Gaining the first-rounder would give them another young prospect to add to their already-extremely young core. At the same time, they get to clear cap in hopes of luring a top player down the road.
