OTG's NBA Trade Deadline Marathon: Day 10.5
*The Sixers also send a second round pick to the Jazz*
The Sixers are low on wings and high on tall dudes who pass well. The latter is in jest, yet the former is entirely accurate as the Sixers wing depth is questionable at best. I'm talking directly to you Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot and Justin Anderson. Because of this, the Sixers would be trading a fan favorite in Dario Saric for Rodney Hood and Joe Johnson. There are two major aspects to this trade with the first being an influx of scoring wings. Not much is to be expected from Joe Johnson outside of floor spacing and veteran guidance. Rodney Hood is the true target of the trade. Hood can offer the Sixers something they're missing in wing creation and scoring and a consistent perimeter threat off the bench or as a placeholder in the starting lineup until Markelle Fultz locates his shoulder or ends his career in shot-put.
The second important aspect is clearing the books and ending the Jerryd Bayless experience. Bayless hold the Sixers back from being full out players in free agency this summer. By swapping contracts of similar total in Hood and Saric and taking on Johnson expiring contract for Bayless, the Sixers will acquire that cap space they covet.
It may be sad to see Saric go as he has improved as a shooter and meshed better than expected with the starting lineup. Yet, a wing who is as capable as Hood is offensively and cap space are too good to pass up if this trade is in play. The Sixers could be a Bayless zip code change away from a real shot at Paul George or LeBron James. So, Jerryd, I hear Salt Lake City has some solid ski resorts.
