Warped Speed: Attrition and Injury Have Sidetracked the Warriors’ Dynasty

CBS In classic folklore, the protagonist Faust, dissatisfied with his life, makes a deal with the Devil, exchanging his soul for untold knowledge and pleasures. This tale has been adapted over the years, from the play Damn Yankees to the Snoop Doggy Dog’s single Murder Was the Case, each time with a stargazing protagonist exchanging his mortal soul for the excesses of the good life. And each time, the Devil comes to collect. The Golden State Warriors may be the latest adaptat

Not Feeling Minnesota: Thibs Out As Wolves Coach

Deadspin Being an 80s baby, I heed the wisdom of Ferris Bueller when he observed that life moves pretty fast. And if everyday life comes at you fast, then it travels at the speed of light in the NBA. Today life came at Minnesota Timberwolves Tom Thibodeau at a breakneck pace. The Timberwolves parted ways with its head coach on Sunday, ending a promising yet ultimately disappointing chapter of Minnesota basketball. The timing of Thibodeau’s dismissal came as a surprise to many

MEET ME IN TEMECULA: How an Internet War of Words on Christmas Got Me Hooked on Twitter

I joined Twitter in 2010 when my evidence professor asked a room full of second-year law students to sign up for the app and tweet the rule for searches and seizures. I can’t remember what I tweeted; it was likely something not terribly profound or even accurate, which is probably why I elected for transactional law upon graduation, but I digress. Anyway, after that initial entry into the Twitterverse my activity was light, in part because the 2L year is time consuming and ap

Cavs See Ghosts: King's Return Closes This Chapter of Cleveland Basketball History

On the eve of the Thanksgiving Holiday, LeBron James will make his return to Cleveland to face the franchise he elevated to NBA champion just three seasons ago. Given that history, this return to the Land should go far better for James than it did in 2010 when he was a member of the Miami. But it will nonetheless be a bittersweet reunion, as it will serve as the appropriate bookend to the most successful run in Cavs' history, culminated by that magical 2016 championship run.

    TRAILBLAZER

Photo Courtesy of OregonLive.com Yesterday the world was shocked to learn of the passing of Paul Allen, co-founder of Microsoft Paul Allen. Allen had recently announced that his cancer had returned and sadly he succumbed to complications from the disease shortly thereafter. Most of the world knows Allen for his partnership with Bill Gates to create the software giant. But to sports fans, especially those in the Pacific Northwest, Allen is also the owner of the Seattle Seahawk

MUST-SEE TV: NBA Stories To Follow This Season

The changing of the leaves from summer to fall means that your favorite shows are back from vacation and ready to top last year’s performances. The NBA is no exception. After an offseason that saw Magic Johnson land the game’s best player, the Warriors upgrade at center and the Spurs’ franchise player “request” a trade, this season should be as entertaining as ever. This is the time of year where fantasy football lineups are neglected, and we watch the Roundball Rock origin s

    NOBODY’S FOOL

Orlando Ramirez- of USA TODAY Sports Internet foolishness long behind him, JaVale McGee is poised to be a big part of the Lakers success this season. Former UCLA coach John Wooden once advised to be more concerned with your character than your reputation, because your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are. Powerful words but, with all due respect to Coach Wooden, he was never featured on TNT’s Shaqtin’ A Fool. JaVale McGee

    Days of Future Past

Star Tribune The Minnesota Timberwolves are preparing for another season as questions remain about Jimmy Butler’s fate, with the all-star guard recently requesting a trade. Butler’s trade demand coincided with a bizarre, if not entertaining, social media beef between Butler, teammate Andrew Wiggins’, Wiggins’ brother Nick and former NBA player turned analyst Stephen Jackson. And though Wiggins and Butler apparently have no intentions of forming their own banana boat crew any

The Philadelphia 76ers finished off the Miami Heat in five games, advancing to the second round of the NBA Playoffs for the first time since 2012. In front of a packed Wells Fargo Center crowd, (a crowd that included comedian Kevin Hart and the recently released Meek Mill), the Philly fans witnessed the next evolution of The Process. And there

FOUR TIMES TOM SHEPPARD WAS COMPLETELY CRAZY AND NOBODY SAID ANYTHING ABOUT IT

Above the Rim is an underrated cinematic classic. As a film, it explores common themes in creative ways. It’s the story of loss, redemption and family told in a contemporary way. As a basketball movie, the hoops hold up. Except for Blue Chips and He Got Game, Above the Rim has arguably the best cinematic basketball in movie history, non-documentary division. And the soundtrack? Top five all-time, regardless of genre. I recently watched the movie again and noticed that there a

It’s Science: No Hip-Hop, No Hoops

The NBA recently announced that it would be returning to Seattle, as the Golden State Warriors will face the Sacramento Kings in a preseason game next season. This news was bittersweet to basketball fans in the Emerald City. On the one hand, the NBA will be back in the Pacific Northwest, if only for a night. On the other hand, it will feature a game between the player who should be the former franchise’s all-time best versus the franchise that should currently be in western W

    THE LAST ACTION HERO

There is one Kobe Bryant commercial that always sticks out in my mind. The “Love Me or Hate Me” ad produced by Nike that was, to me, the beginning of the Mamba era. In the spot, we see grainy footage of an exhausted Bryant going through one of his legendary workouts – weights, shots, the whole gambit. Bryant provides the voiceover and proposes that the feelings about him have always been love or hate with no room for something in between. As Bryant notes in the ad, he is hate

*The Cleveland Cavaliers trade Kevin Love to the Oklahoma City Thunder in exchange for Paul George and Kyle Singler* Apparently, Kevin Love no longer fits in. Amid the Cavaliers’ most recent struggles, including a horrendous 148-124 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder in front on a national television audience last week, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported that the Cavs had a player’s only meeting where the issue of Love’s perceived lack of general effort and “illness” prior to

Is the Truth in his feelings about his jersey retirement ceremony? Do he have a point or is he just being "petty". Kobe Bryant: A Star Wars Story

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away…. Like so many fans around the world, I have been wrapped up in Star Wars mania over the holiday season. The latest installation to the franchise, The Last Jedi, is breaking box office records and has received widespread acclaim. Around the same time as the Last Jedi’s release, NBA fans also witnessed the jersey retirement ceremony of one Kobe Bean Bryant earlier this month.
