It's Fair to Question J.B. Bickerstaff's Coaching in Memphis

Houston Chronicle Following a red-hot start to the season for the Memphis Grizzlies, the team has fallen to .500, stumbling to 3-7 in their last 10 games. The strength of the Grizzlies' roster, especially on the wing, has been much-lamented as Memphis has tumbled from an early season perch atop the Southwest Division to the outside of the Western playoffs, but the real culprit is head coach J.B. Bickerstaff. Memphis parlayed an injury-filled season into an uncommonly high dra

Tyronn Lue Dismissed as Cavaliers Head Coach

David Liam Kyle/NBAE via GettyImages Cleveland Cavaliers head coach Tyronn Lue has been fired, several sources reported early this Sunday. Cavs players were informed of the move, reports the Athletic's Shams Charania, after the team started the season with six straight losses, including back-to-back blowout home defeats to the Atlanta Hawks and Brooklyn Nets. According to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, Larry Drew will serve as the interim head coach, as management held a meeting

3 Reasons Why Phil Jackson May Not Be the Greatest NBA Coach Ever

USA Today Let’s briefly go over Phil Jackson’s successful NBA coaching résumé: 11 NBA Championships (most by a coach) 1155-485 coaching record .704 Win/Loss Percentage — highest of any coach with 500+ games coached Four-time NBA All-Star Game head coach 1996 NBA Coach of the Year 11-2 Finals record 20 Playoff appearances It is hard to fathom another coach surpassing this coaching record with a higher winning percentage and 11 championships. I am going to be daring by challeng

D’Antoni and Kerr: The “Right” Way vs. the “Best” Way

Photo Credit: SB Nation The conversation surrounding the 2018 Houston Rockets has always been strange. When the NBA community talks about this team, they seem to never focus on the present, or on reality. It’s always about the future — can they hang with the Golden State Warriors? — or about the past — is James Harden a choker? Does Mike D’Antoni’s system work in the playoffs? Even when focused on the present, it’s rarely about the results. The conversation shifts to broader

Igor Kokoskov: Building a Brighter Future (Hopefully)

The beginning of this offseason has already been a tumultuous one for the Suns (like season, like offseason as they say). The Suns had two of the top coaching candidates in Mike Budenholzer and David Fizdale turn them down. And they even got the collective heart rate of Suns fans up by being linked to the likes of Jason Kidd and Vinny del Negro. But after the thorough search that was promised by Ryan McDonough, the Suns finally have their coach. And I’m not trying to brag (sa

Hey Phoenix, This Bud’s For You

You know when you’re at a buffet, and you fill up your plate with chicken wings and pork chops. Then when you go to sit down, you realize that there was prime rib the whole time, and you just missed it. That’s how I feel after writing over 1,500 words on the Suns’ coaching search right before they were granted permission to interview Atlanta’s Mike Budenholzer. I didn’t even know that was an option! Can we bring in Brad Stevens in for an interview too? Coach Pop? If I would h

Filling the Hot Seat: The Suns’ Coaching Search

I don’t know if you’ve heard, but Phoenix Suns have a big offseason coming up. It’s going to be so big that it’s all Suns fans have been talking about since December. That tends to happen when your team’s regular season has been so awful. It’s been such a dumpster fire that I heard the majority of Phoenix’s homeless population just hovers around Talking Stick Resort Arena for warmth nowadays. Perhaps the most important decision the team will make is who their next head coach

    Hot Seat Watch: Tom Thibodeau

When you’re the head coach of a team, and allowed to “shop for the groceries”, as Bill Parcells once alluded to, there’s a certain measure of job security. Tom Thibodeau enjoys that right now, as Head Coach and President of Basketball Operations for the Minnesota Timberwolves. General manager Scott Layden surely has some input in moves that are made, but Thibodeau has the final say for better or worse. Even with no prior experience as a personnel guy, Thibodeau brought a lot

George Karl Shocks & Angers with Upcoming Tell-All Book

Unemployed former head coach George Karl has turned his attention from his shortcomings on the sidelines to slinging hair-raising allegations in his latest ploy for publicity for his book, “Furious George: My Forty Years Surviving NBA Divas, Clueless GMs, and Poor Shot Selection.” After receiving a pink slip from the fledgling Sacramento Kings last April, Karl has busied himself taking low blows at some of his former players and the league. Karl first made headlines when he l

Luke Walton Is the Lakers Biggest Surprise

Luke Walton began his coaching career going 39-4. He did this with the Golden State Warriors while filling in for the recovering Steve Kerr. This was an amazing run for Walton and the Warriors , including 19-0 start to the season. But in the back of a lot of people’s minds, this success was was because of the Warriors’ talent, not Walton’s coaching. The Los Angeles Lakers on the other hand, believed in Walton and took a chance on him this offseason. That gamble seems to be pa

Top 10 Coaches Heading into 2016-17

I built this list with a couple of things in mind. I have tried to mix in their coaching resume, tactics, player development, coaching skill, who I would want to coach my team, among other things. Keep in mind this list is purely subjective as you can’t measure coaching ability with statistical analysis, the way you would when comparing players. So on that note here we go: 1. Gregg Popovich I don’t think anybody would argue with Pop in the top spot. He has been doing it for 2
